The Gospel is the great work of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus in which He destroys every obstacle of your joy and in which in that removal He displays the glory that gives us the greatest happiness.

The reason the Gospel is good news is because its design is your eternal happiness. He destroys what makes your happiness fail and displays everything that makes your happiness full. You are experiencing the Gospel when you are enjoying Christ. Through the Gospel, God removes every single obstacle to your everlasting, all-satisfying pleasure. Every obstacle is obliterated by the blood of Jesus. What obstacles?

1) The wrath of God. {Propitiation}
-Romans 5:9; Romans 3:25
-Galatians 3:13- Jesus steps inbetween and absorbs the entire curse at God’s appointment

2) We were alienated and far away from Him. {Reconciliation}
-Ephesians 2:13; Romans 5:10
-Distance was our obstacle, but He brought us near.

3) Real guilt and real sin in our lives.
-Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:6
-It’s on Jesus.

4) Absence of righteousness in my life. {Justification}
-Romans 3:10; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 5:19
-In Him, you are righteous. Perfect. Counted as sinners in Adam,  you are counted righteous in Christ.

5) I’m going to die and so are you. {Resurrection}
-Hebrews 9:27; Romans 8:11
-Your joy in Jesus, small as it is now, never stops!

6) Spiritual deadness in my soul is no longer an obstacle to my happiness and satisfaction in Jesus.
-Ephesians 2:4- He has made us alive!
You have tastebuds on your soul’s tongue and you were made to lick the lollipop of the Gospel. Sin used to taste so good, but your tastebuds have changed!

7) Satan hates your joy.
-Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14
-Christ stripped Satan of the armor. The only thing he has now is the accusation of unforgiven sin. If at the cross every sin was covered, Satan’s mouth is shut. He has no weapon. Satan can gum you but his fangs are gone.

If you have experienced these things, have you experienced the Gospel? Have you experienced the greatest Good that makes these things good that aren’t good in themselves? These obstacles being removed aren’t good unless the obstacles are moved to something else. All these things aren’t the Gospel, but a means of the Gospel. So what makes the Good News good? To enjoy, savor, prize, embrace, and walk with God Himself.

“…in which in that removal He displays the glory that gives us the greatest happiness.”
-Christ did not just make our joy possible in the Gospel, He died to become the supreme object of our joy in that Gospel.
-Satan doesn’t want you to see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (in His death and resurrection, He has secured my joy and displayed His glory). 2 Corinthians 4:4-6
-The ultimate goal of the Gospel is for us to see it, savor it, and show it. Embrace, delight, love it.
-Ephesians 1:5-6- He died for you so you would praise His grace and nobody praises what he doesn’t enjoy.

-The life that drinks most deeply at the well of the Gospel and displays the glory and grace of Christ most clearly is one that unremittingly pursues Him. The Christian life is a lifelong quest to make Jesus the lifeblood of all our pleasures.

-The pursuit of your joy is commanded by the Bible. (John 6:35; Philippians 4:4; Jeremiah 2- Saying the fountain is nice and drinking from the river is not worship.)
-You can’t love without joy in Jesus. (2 Corinthians 9- Their love came from their joy.) There is only way to overflow with love for others: happiness in Jesus.

-Does it really glorify God to pursue your joy? Yes. We make much of Him when we are satisfied in Him. Just like when a husband buys roses for his wife on their anniversary and it’s out of delight rather than duty, it not only makes him happy, it also makes much of his wife.

He destroys what makes your happiness fail and displays everything that makes your happiness full.
